with 3 great ideas for the quiet times.
In a world where everything moves fast, memory keeping asks us to slow down. io notice. to reflect.
It’s not just about the birthdays, holidays, and big moments, though these are wonderful to document. It’s about the everyday, today’s mug of choice, the messy bun, the afternoon light falling on the kitchen counter. These “ordinary” moments often become the most extraordinary with time. The big days are the easier choices! But don’t discount the small stuff……………

When we pair photographs with our written thoughts, feelings, quotes, or snippets of conversation—we’re not just saving an image, we’re capturing context, emotion, and perspective. We’re telling the story behind the picture. This form of documenting is so very powerful.
This practice doesn’t just serve us, it serves those who come after us. It helps loved ones understand who we were, how we lived, what we valued, and how we found joy in small things. After all it’s the small things that with hindsight, become the big things!
It turns a photo album into a time capsule of love, it can show a story of growth, resilience, and a glimpse into family life and create a legacy.
Are you thinking, OK Bel If I had the time for that then I would love to, or, life here is not what I feel is worthy of documenting, then I hear you! I can relate, having a youngster with Special Educational Needs has seen our family life have periods of living inside four walls for extended periods of time. But, that’s when the very small details really matter most.
Here’s 3 ideas To document life when nothing new seems to be happening.
- Lists: Lists can be repeated annually or more often for example Favourites: Song, book, clothing, food, movie or TV show, what are the things right now that you or your family are really into and enjoying.
- In Focus: This could be the focus around a new special interest (this is relevant in the Autistic world) or new hobby for the less ‘intense’ brain.
- Around Me: What is bringing you joy? It could be the blossom on the tree, the house plant that you’ve cultivated, that cosy space on the sofa with your book waiting to be read? Take the photos and tell the story, remember to use how you feel in your story telling. Your future self will thank you!
