Make Your Own Stencil

How to Make and Use a Stencil Created From Dies.

I love using Masks and Stencils in my Crafting and Stampin’ Up! have a lovely range of Masks including a new set of 4 in the July to December Mini Catalogue. They are great for adding colour with Blending Brushes, Sponge Daubers, Embossing Pastes, Pastels and Spritzers to name just a few.

There is however the option to make masks/stencils with Dies that we have by die cutting them multiple times on cardstock to apply mediums through. These won’t be as durable as the purchased version, but you can create some fun backgrounds and effects, depending on what you use to create the stencil then durability can vary. If you were to use Window Sheets then your mask/stencil will last longer and would be more suitable for using Embossing Paste and Spritzing as they are wetter products.

I created two of my masks/stencils using Thick Basic White Card, with hindsight I would recommend using Shimmer White as it is thinner so when stamping into the cut out areas the stamp images would look more defined without the card thickness creating too much extra depth. Also the Shimmer White has more resistance to moisture due to the shimmer coating so in turn should also last longer.

Create Your Own Stencils using Die Cuts

I used my Blending Brushes to add colour through the die cut shapes using two colours in the same colour, the second slightly darker shade to add depth to one side of the shapes. I then stamped through the die cut shapes to add extra texture. You can watch the Facebook Live video on my FB Business Page HERE

  • With the Stars I used Pool Party and Bermuda Bay for blending and then added some stamped off Misty Moonlight with a textured Dot stamp from The Forever Fern stamp set. Splats from Flirty Flamingo.
  • With the Hearts I used Blushing Bride and Flirty Flamingo for blending and then added some stamped off Flirty Flamingo with the watercolour style small stamp from Hydrangea Haven.Splats from Pool Party
  • The Circle background I used Fresh Freesia and Highland Heather and then I stamped Butterfly Brilliance on top. Splats from Fresh Freesia.
Stencilled Background, Cute Bear Card, Hello Sentiment

I made this one during the Facebook Live with the ‘Count on Me’ stamp set (one of my absolute faves!) The Bear is wearing some cute paper pieced dungarees and these and the paper that is peeking at the side are from the Sale-a-Bration freebie papers Beautifully Penned. I coloured the dungarees with the Flirty Flamingo Stampin Blends. The sentiment label featuring the ‘Biggest Wish’ stamp set like the card base is in Blushing Bride card and there’s a punched out piece of vellum just behind the bear with some tiny stamped hearts.

Butterfly Card, stancilled Background, Purples, Stampin' Up!

Both these cards were put together later my Pool Party Star card features the ‘Sweet Farewell’ stamp set. I was so glad to use this stamp again as it’s so fun to use and that suitcase is great fun to colour. I used the ‘Marker to Stamp’ technigue with the sentiment, this is a great way of getting two colours on a sentiment by using the brush tip of the Stampin Write Markers to colour in your sentiments. I used Misty Moonlight and Pool Party.

The Butterfly card was finished with some punching a couple of dies and more of that lovely FREE paper! The sentiment here was from ‘Free As A Bird’. This stamp set has the most beautiful sentiments with adorable fonts.

My inspiration for the theme of my Live this week was the fantastic Erica Cerwin – aka Pink Buckaroo, she used leaf dies to create a background in the same way fro a card featuring the fun squirrels from the ‘Nuts About You’ stamp set for her Facebook Friday last week. I love how Stampin’ Up! is such a creative and sharing place and we all inspire each other so much!
